In the early part of 2021 I made audio recordings of walks within the Cromarty Firth. I carried a metronome and walked North. Inspired by Basho’s (The Narrow Road to the Deep North) ‘strong desire to wander’ and his direction to the ‘Deep North’, I aimed to capture something of the places and to translate this into song. This is the result. The song ‘Footsteps on the ground’ is a good example of this attempt. If you listen, you can hear the quality of the sound of the footsteps change as the path moves from grass to stone.

I Looked at the shape of trees, my shadow, the stars and wind direction to find my path. Stegner (Wilderness letter) was also a real source of inspiration, particularly his thinking on the power that closeness and interaction with truly wild spaces can bring.

The songs contain ideas about my place within my own landscape. I met a dog in the darkness in the Invergordon tank farm, a bemused walker in Evanton woods and a low flying plane over Nigg beach.
